"Dashanan" means 'ten-headed' and is another name for Ravana, the
demon-king who features in the mythological epic Ramayana. Though Ravana
battles with the divine incarnation Rama and is vanquished by him, he was
a disciple of Lord Shiva and is portrayed sympathetically in this painting
as one whose being is centered in Shiva. Tantric, folk and personal symbolism
combine to create an image of compact integrated power.
